Santa Will Be A Little Early This Year

With the image of Sir Steve Redgrave running up those Olympic steps, torch in hand, it comes to mind that the Marlow Santa’s Fun Run really is not that far away, and Sir Steve will be very much in evidence. As in previous years, Sir Steve will not only be starting the event, but he and some of his family will be running too.

So run it, walk it, push it, or just watch, because Santa, or rather hundreds of Santas, will be running through the streets of Marlow in December. Whether you’re young or old, or somewhere in the middle, walking, running or jogging, perhaps pushing a buggy or walking your dog, you will be welcome to be a part of the 2012 Santa Fun Run.

It’s all about fun and enjoyment and helping the Rotary Clubs of Marlow raise money for Charity. The Santas come in all shapes and sizes, some are disabled and some are running for a very special reason, some raise considerable sums of money for their own favourite charity, but fun is the key word.

The great annual Rotary Clubs of Marlow Santa’s Fun Run, starts and finishes at Higginson Park, Marlow, on the morning of Sunday 2nd  December. So why are we telling you now with months to go? Well first of all we want you to sign up as soon as possible and start raising sponsorship. Book early to avoid disappointment. The website www.santasfunrun.org , launched on 1st September, has lots and lots of information and the all important entry and sponsorship forms.

This is a fantastic social event on the 5km around the town course, where you can meet up with friends and  generally enjoy yourself – and of course help the charity of your choice  too. And for all those who complete the course, there is a celebratory bronze medal – just to say “Well Done”.

Last year Santa’s Fun Run raised well over  £20,000, and this year we hope to do even better, giving a major contribution to our lead charity, Guide Dogs For the Blind, who will be entering their own team. If you’d like to be
part of this team and receive a Guide Dogs goody bag, click on the Guide Dogs link on our website.

In the eight years since the first Rotary Santa’s Fun Run, the total raised has exceeded £95,000 for deserving causes, many of them local.

Cost: £14 for adults, £10 for 12 to 17 years, £6 for 5 to 11 year olds. Adults receive a Santa Suit, children a Santa T-shirt and everyone is awarded a medal and a ‘goody bag’ at the finishing line.

Organising the Rotary Santa’s Fun Run involves a lot of work, and that’s the responsibility of Marlow and Marlow Thames Rotary Clubs: to make it fun, safe, and successful. Rotary members and their supporters do everything from handing out the Santa suits, handing out water on the course, to clearing away rubbish when it’s all over. They agree the 5 km (3 miles) route with the Council, appoint marshals to direct diverted traffic and to make sure pedestrians stay safely out of the runners’ way. Over a hundred people volunteer on the day to make sure everything goes smoothly. So please get behind us and help by supporting this worthwhile charity event.
